The 25 Songs I Digged Most in 2013

No better way to close out the year than with my version of The Best Songs of 2013.  Like all such lists, it is very subjective.

My process began by making a list of the songs I enjoyed most from this year's blog entries.  Then I listened to these songs - over and over - trying to determine the ones that I considered the best.  Things like strength of songwriting and vocal performances mattered significantly, as did vibe, groove, musicianship, and originality.

Here is the list:

1.  Marshall Dear - Savages

2.  Wakin On A Pretty Day - Kurt Vile

3.  I Built a Town - Mount Moriah

4.  Song For Zula - Phosphorescent

5.  You Found Another Lover - Ben Harper with Charles Musselwhite

6.  Lightning Bolt - Jake Bugg

7.  The Fall - Rhye

8.  Retrograde - James Blake

9.  Drop The Game - Flume & Chet Faker

10.  Liquid Spirit - Gregory Porter

11.  Waltz About Whiskey - Mandolin Orange

12.  Master Hunter - Laura Marling

13.  Sneak Out The Back Door - Ron Sexsmith

14.  Demons - The National

15.  Shuggie - Foxygen

16.  So Good At Being In Trouble - Unknown Mortal Orchestra

17.  What I Might Do - Ben Pearce

18.  Your Life Your Call - Junip

19.  I Heard - Young Fathers

20.  No Expression - The Sufis

21.  Tin Star - Lindi Ortega

22.  Calling Cards - Neko Case

23.  Horsemouth - Ghost Wave

24.  One - Yamantaka // Sonic Titan

25.  Corazón Tatú - Los Amigos Invisibles

Please share your thoughts on this year's list.  I always appreciate your feedback, it is what keeps this blog going.

And may you have a Happy New Year, filled with songs that you really dig !!!

  1. Ok, I will share my thoughts. Big shocker. Your list really is almost perfect- almost..

But first, thanks for keeping your blog going. I know that when I tune in that I will hear something awesome, interesting, exciting, etc. It has also been very therapeutic many times for me, so thanks for that.

I love that you have Marshall Dear as #1- I really love that band and that song...excellent first pick. I also have a thing for #s 3, 4, 12, 22 and 23..all for my own reasons, which I'm sure are documented (I'm kind of a blabbermouth blog reader, huh?)

I went back through the archive tonight- what else was there to do whilst nursing a mild hangover? And I re-discovered some that I really digged- (feels like that should be "dug", but that probably makes me sound illiterate.)

Here are some of my other favorites:

    Downwind- Sean Rowe
    Drinkin'- Holly Williams
Thousand Year Old Child- Pure X
    Foreign Films- Hills Like Elephants
    Captured- Gov't Mule
Fight To Keep- Run River North
Super-8- Jason Isbell- mostly for the fact that this song introduced me to that entire album, which has become one of my all time favorites, esp. the song called Songs That She Sang In The great.

I'm sure I missed some others.

Again, thanks for the great songs, great blog and great friendship...

Happy New Year, and get going on 2014!

    1. Thanks for the feedback.

There were about 10 songs that almost made the list. I thought about expanding to a Top 50, but figured against it.

Five of your songs were in "the other 10". The one that was taken out of the 25 spot at the last minute was Bodybabe by Spleen.

  2. After I submitted my list I realized I'd forgotten one of my biggest favorites:

    New Town Velocity- Johnny Marr

    Great song.
